eBay Fraud

There are many types of fraud on the internet:
  • auction fraud
  • non-delivery fraud
  • credit/debit card fraud
  • investment fraud
  • business fraud
  • confidence fraud
  • identity theft
  • check fraud
  • Nigerian letter fraud
  • communications fraud
The crime that affects the most people, because of their consumer status is e-commerce fraud in consumer-to-consumer auctions like eBay (http://www.ebay.com). In 2002, auction fraud accounted for 46 percent of all reported fraud and has consistently remained a large portion of fraud for the past 3 years (IFCCFBI 3). About 48,000 cases of Internet fraud were reported to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) in 2002, almost tripled the amount of reports filed in 2001. The overwhelming popularity of auction fraud is due to the fact that it is so easy to get away with. Milosh Jovic, an eBay seller says, "It’s really easy to get away with fraud online because if you get caught, you can just make another [user] account. No one will know the difference" (Jovic)
