In 1999, a pilot project was set up by the University of Massachusetts to investigate and solve fraud in the range of $1 to $15,000 dollars. In a two-week period, over one hundred and fifty complaints were filed, three quarters of which where resolved (Prins 280). The success of this venture lead to the development of e-mediation services such as SquareTrade (http://www.squaretrade.com). SquareTrade’s aim is to "build trust in transactions and to create a better online trading experience" (SquareTrade About Us). Mediation involves voluntary willingness to participate by both parties. Mediators focus on what is causing the problem, look at both sides of the issues, and make recommendations (SquareTrade Help). Much of the emotional tension involved in the dispute process is diffused by mediators. However, since mediation services are not subject to courtroom proceedings, there are no legal requirements that the parties must follow (SquareTrade Help).
