QuarkXPress

Contribution to Multimedia Top

QuarkXPress has always had endless tools for design needs; tools to improve productivity of work, tools to keep projects easily organized, adaptability to 3rd party graphics software (such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word), and adaptability to constantly changing technologies and environments to produce stunning paper and web page output.

In 1981, Tim Gill and Fred Ebrahimi founded Quark and developed their first version of QuarkXPress in 1987. QuarkXPress 3.0 was shot into fame during the 1990’s with its simple to use but advanced typography features. Later versions 4.0 and 5.0, exceeded in basic word-processing, paragraph formatting, picture, color, and document construction techniques that the latest Microsoft Word and Publisher contain. Today, version 6.0 takes advantage of cutting edge XML, web, and style sheet technologies that have the above-mentioned programs crawling on their knees. QuarkXPress has helped millions of people all over the world “present the information and ideas that have shaped the world for the last 16 years” [Quark Inc., 2003]. Features from QuarkXPress have been modified and adapted by every major publishing program in the world. Without QuarkXPress many advanced features in paragraph and typography manipulations would probably not exist today. Perhaps even the creation of calendars, labels, birthday cards, and brochures would not be feasible today if QuarkXPress had not stepped into the scene.
