QuarkXPress has many unique features that make it appealing to layout designers everywhere. For example, you can change the whole layout of the workspace to match your work habits. You’ll also never be behind with its wide range of file type support.

One feature that utilizes a realistic workspace is the concept of project files. Layouts can be created for a variety of documents and those documents and layouts can be saved together in one project file simulating a true office space. Layers can also be used to better organize information.

Synchronized text is a feature that will soon be adopted by other publishing programs. This new concept allows you to share and manage a single group of content across different documents. To change an incorrect phone number or the properties of that phone number, just change the synchronized box content and the modification will be updated throughout the whole project. If you made a mistake synchronizing your text, you can even use the multiple levels of undo and redo.

Features such as advanced image output increase the resolution of an image without any performance problems. QuarkXPress also utilizes advanced color palettes that help create consistent and visually attractive designs. Serious graphic designers will also be able to use advanced cropping and layering functions to enhance their designs.

As a prepress technician, I use QuarkXPress 80% to 90% of my day. The addition of contextual menu support and an improved print interface have increased our productivity and ability to get customer files RIPed and on press fast. Updated color libraries have helped us eliminate problems color matching with other publishing software. The enhanced 'Collect for Output' feature now allows us to accurately gather all the final linked and embedded graphics, including all fonts, for those complex in-house design jobs.

For the web, QuarkXPress offers more control over designing cascading menus, specifying font families for style sheets and creating rollovers [Apple Computer Inc., 2003]. You can even convert web pages to print layouts and then convert them back to web pages again. Even the creation of advanced PDF files with anchor and hyperlinks will keep you away from using extra 3rd party programs.
